Online Casino Players Doubled Last Year.
A recent study by the American Gaming Association (AGA) has found that the number of Americans gambling at the online casinos doubled last year. Approximately four percent of the US population stated they regularly participate in online casino gambling, and say convenience is the number one reason why online casino gaming is proving so popular. The survey was part of a wider study on gambling habits by the Association.Other findings showed that gambling revenue at U.S. land-based casinos also rose five percent last year, due to strong growth from companies like MGM Mirage and Harrah's Entertainment. According to the AGA's chief executive, Frank Fahrenkopf, there is room for yet more growth due to the increased numbers of gambling fans turning to the internet to gamble at online casinos, despite ongoing legality issues. A mere 19 percent of the 552 online casino gamblers polled in the AGA's survey view online casino gambling as illegal.
Online gambling worldwide generated approximately $12 billion in revenue last year, with about half of the revenue coming from U.S. casino players. The AGA has traditionally represented land-based casinos and suppliers and has previously spoken out against the increased competition caused by the online casino industry. However, the group has recently re-evaluated its approach toward internet gambling and has called for the U.S. government to commission a study in order to evaluate its impact.
