This Year WSOP Bigger And Better Than Predicted.
2006 World Series of Poker (WSOP) has been bigger and better than predicted, according to recent reports. Harrah's Entertainment executives had expected this year's championship to include around 8,000 players but this has proved to be a conservative estimate, says the Casino City Times.Players losing within the first few hours are being replaced by alternates, which has swelled the tournament's numbers to well above 8,600. The top prize winner of the main event will took home $12 million.
It is thought that the number of entries may have exceeded 9,000 by Monday afternoon, far higher than the 5,619 players that entered last year, making it the largest ever participation in the event's 37-year WSOP history.
"It's pretty amazing to have this number of players in here," the WSOP's communications director Gary Thompson told the publication.
With greater numbers comes a greater first prize of around $12 million, considerably more than the $7.5 million pocketed by last year's champion Joseph Hachem.
